elcome to Mysterious World, your online guide to exotic travel destinations
around the world! Mysterious World is a quarterly online journal dedicated to
exploring ancient and exotic locales around the world, providing you with the
information you need to truly appreciate what they have to offer. Mysterious
World provides you with the historical, archaeological, and travel information,
as well as biographical information about famous people and artifacts related
to these famous locales. Whether you are planning that dream trip to Egypt, or
you are looking for an interesting nearby destination for a simple day trip,
or overnight excursion, Mysterious World covers it all.
In this issue of Mysterious World (Summer 1999), we will revisit the
Cahokia Mounds.
In part two of our series on Cahokia, we will study in detail the religious, social, economic, and
political aspects of the Cahokian culture. In part one of this series, we saw that the Cahokians were
part of a larger culture, commonly referred to as the Mississippian culture, which flourished in what
is now known as the American Midwest from a.d. 900-1200, during Europe's dark ages. This culture spread
throughout the Midwest, with major centers in such areas as southwest Illinois (Cahokia) and southern
Ohio (Serpent Mound). In part two, we will study the Mississippian lifestyle and culture of the Cahokians,
and how their religion, society, economy and polity were so closely intertwined as to be indistinguishable.
Our second feature revisits the mysterious
Piasa Creature.
In part one of the series, we studied the mythical "Piasa Creature", the legend of which had first
been discovered by the explorers Marquette and Joliet during their exploration of North America.
In part two of this three-part series, we will study the phenomenon of the Piasa Creature in the
context of other legends involving mythical flying creatures throughout the world, from the classic
Medieval dragon of Europe to the mythical thunderbird of North American and ancient Near Eastern legend.
We will also see how the phenomenon of flying "monsters" has continued well into modern times, and
discuss possible explanations regarding these sightings.
Part III of our four-part series,
"The Riddle of the Sphinx",
rounds out this quarterly offering.
Here, you will gain more insight into the original intent behind the Pyramids and Sphinx: that they are
not simply an elaborate memorial for megalomaniacal pharaohs, but a message written in stone.
And this stone riddle still sits like a monolith, waiting on the Giza plain for man to discover
its answer. To catch part I of this series, visit our new
